Probation is a type of punishment or sentence given to a criminal offender that allows them to serve their sentence outside of prison or jail. Instead of being incarcerated, the offender is placed under the supervision of a probation officer and is required to comply with certain conditions, such as staying away from certain people or places, submitting to drug tests, and attending counseling or treatment programs. Probation is often granted to first-time offenders or those who have committed non-violent crimes, but it can also be a condition of a reduced sentence for a more serious offense. Violating the terms of probation can result in the offender being sent to jail or prison to serve their remaining sentence.
